The Radio Girls of Roselawn

Margaret Penrose

1922
"Listen!" interrupted Amy Drew. A sound--a shrill and compelling voice--reached their ears. Amy's hand clutched at Jessie's arm and held her back. There was nobody in sight, and the nearest house was someway back from the road. "Help! He-e-elp!" repeated the voice, shrilly. "It is a girl," declared Jessie, beginning to run and half dragging Amy Drew with her. "She is in trouble! We must help her!"

The Radio Girls of Roselawn; or A Strange Message From the Air is is the first title of the Radio Girls series. Best friends Jessie Norwood and Amy Drew have adventures that involve the new miracle of radio in the story plots. In this first book Jessie and Amy decide they will build their own radio. They proceed to do that and put together a charity event where they broadcast a concert over their new radio, when not many had their own radio and broadcasting was just beginning. But in the process they stumble upon a young girl being kidnapped and set about solving the mystery of the missing girl.

In the early 1920s, when radio was just about the most amazing invention to date, girls weren’t left out of the excitement. While two main Radio Boys series were written (by Gerald Breckenridge and Allen Chapman), Cupples & Leon published the Radio Girls series, one of the many Stratemeyer Syndicate series. They were written under the pseudonym of Margaret Penrose, a name used for other series as well. Although the series only ran to four stories, they are well-written and show the girls as strong and adventurous. The books were later reissued in 1930 by Goldsmith Publishing as part of the larger Campfire Girls series.
