What started as the tabloid Midnight in 1922 had now morphed into Midnight Mystery Stories, dropping the risque tell-all ‘true’ stories for “fiction that has its inception in truth, the romance and mystery that is embedded in Life all around you.” Bernarr Macfadden, an early health pioneer whose health teachings were amazingly accurate and still relevant today, went on to establish the largest magazine empire in the country with some 20 magazines (Physical Culture, True Story, True Detective, True Romances, Liberty, Model Airplane News, Ghost Stories, PhotoPlay, et al.) and about a dozen newspapers. This issue contains twelve short stories, including the lead, “Midnight Caper.”
