Bernarr Macfadden, publisher

1923
"Just before midnight one night I stopped under a street lamp to change a tire. Having finished, I was about to step into the machine when a woman rushed out of the darkness and touched me on the arm. "Won't you please come into my house. My husband has been taken violently sick. I don't know what to do." In a flash I understood. She had seen the medical insignia on the radiator of the car, but before I could refuse she was off. I could do nothing but follow her into the house, up a staircase, into a bedroom. Once inside she closed the door."
What started as the tabloid Midnight in 1922 had now morphed into Midnight Mystery Stories, dropping the risque tell-all ‘true’ stories for “fiction that has its inception in truth, the romance and mystery that is embedded in Life all around you.” Bernarr Macfadden, an early health pioneer whose health teachings were amazingly accurate and still relevant today, went on to establish the largest magazine empire in the country with some 20 magazines (Physical Culture, True Story, True DetectiveTrue RomancesLibertyModel Airplane NewsGhost Stories, PhotoPlay, et al.) and about a dozen newspapers. This issue contains twelve short stories, including the lead, “Midnight Caper.”
