The Crisis is an historical novel of the Civil War written by the "American Churchill." Only a distant relative of the English Winston Churchill, the American Churchill was actually far better known to the public in their early days. So much so that the English Churchill offered to include his middle name Spencer in his signature to help avoid public confusion between them.

The Crisis weaves the dramatic story of Civil War America with the romance of an idealistic Northern lawyer’s love for a southern belle. The action centers about St. Louis, the home of the author as well as the pre-Civil War home of both Grant and Sherman. It covers the years leading up to the first battles of the Civil War in the divided state of Missouri. The Crisis was the best-selling book of 1901.
